The United Kingdom (UK) Government
The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy, as is evident in its governmental structure: The Queen is a ceremonial figurehead with the power to reign and appoint members of Parliament (the House of Lords), while Parliament has two chambers: the House of Lords, which has peers in it who are appointed and hereditary, and the House of Commons, whose members are chosen by the citizens of the UK. Parliament has supreme legislative authority and meets for five years unless dissolved earlier. The House of Lords lost the majority of its jurisdiction in 1911, and its main job is now to amend legislation. Hundreds of hereditary peers were ousted in November 1999 to make the Parliament more democratic. The Crown’s executive authority is exerted through the cabinet, which the prime minister leads. It was not until 1536 that an Act of Union formally established the Union of England and Wales. In 1707, England and Scotland agreed to combine as Great Britain permanently.
The United Kingdom (UK)
The United Kingdom, or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has a long history. The UK and its people believe that the British land was initially inhabited thousands of years ago during the Ice Age. According to this theory, the UK’s landmass was connected to the rest of Europe. The UK was not a sovereign country until the Union of Scotland and England in 1707. In 1800, a treaty was signed to include Ireland. The Union became the world’s most influential and decisive country. At the turn of the century, the UK controlled a quarter of the world’s land. Following WWII, the government lost control of many of its territories. Today, the UK includes the UK, Northern Ireland, and other islands. Until 2016, the UK was a member of the EU. But its function in global processes is still novel.
