University of Southampton’s new branch in New Delhi
The University of Southampton has been granted a license by the Indian government to establish a branch campus in Gurugram, near New Delhi, making it the first UK university to do so. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s educational goals and aims to enhance academic collaboration and social impact in the region.
Mark E. Smith, president and vice-chancellor of the university, emphasized the importance of engaging with India in a global context. The new campus will offer degrees in various fields, including business, law, engineering, and life sciences, beginning in July 2025. The university plans to leverage its long-standing ties with Indian educational institutions, promoting research partnerships and facilitating student and staff mobility.
Atherton, another university official, highlighted that this campus will provide the same quality of education as the UK campus, ensuring a top-tier student experience. The British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, noted that the campus will not only offer world-class education but also enhance cultural exchange between the UK and India.
Overall, this development signifies a commitment to internationalizing education and fostering innovation, aligning with India’s National Education Policy.
