Changes to Canada PGWP
Canada is set to implement significant changes to its post-graduation work permit (PGWP) program starting November 1, 2024. Here are the key updates:
- Language Requirements: Applicants must now provide proof of language ability that meets Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) standards. This proof must include skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with test results accepted from CELPIP, IELTS, and PTE Core. Results must be less than two years old at the time of application.
- Field of Study Requirements: Graduates must come from programs linked to occupations experiencing long-term shortages. The relevant fields of study include:
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Healthcare
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
- Trade
- Transport
- Continuing Old Regulations: To remain eligible for the PGWP, candidates must still meet existing general and physical location eligibility requirements and must graduate from a designated learning institution that qualifies for the PGWP.
These changes come shortly after the Canadian government announced a 10% reduction in the intake cap for international student study permits for 2025, aiming to better manage the volume of temporary residents.
