Previous Sweden Scholars
The number of scholars who had not previously been educated in Sweden being admitted to universities within the country has risen for the 2021 school year, statistics from the country’s Swedish Council for education have revealed.
Figures show that in 2021, the numbers of accepted scholars not earlier educated in Sweden had risen from 27,746 last year to 28,666.
The increase was driven by an uptick in master’s students, with 26,563 admitted – up from 25,647 within the previous school year. A modest increase saw 2,289 admitted at bachelor’s level, up from 2,276 in 2020.
The numbers of actual students who arrived within the country to review in 2020 and enrollment data remain unavailable.
2019 v 2020 v 2021
The latest official figures are from 2019/20, which show that 39,600 incoming students were studying courses at Swedish universities – 13,100 were exchange students and 26,500 were so-called ‘free mover students who join courses outside of organized student mobility programs.
Among the 26,500 free movers, 8,800 paid student fees for the year – a rise of around 800 from the previous year. Of the free movers, 73% came from Asia, with around 2,000 from India.
Sweden as Study Destination
“Sweden is just becoming more recognized as a study destination,” Douglas Washburn, senior marketing manager at Study in Sweden said, asked why the numbers had increased.
“Students relish studying and experiencing Sweden but it takes time for a natural study destination prominence to create and to build word of mouth among scholars and alumni.
The country continues to crave its reputation by providing “high-quality in-country education programs where that is safe, modern and advanced in terms of innovation, equity, and sustainability”.
“We have a clear position, and includes several other countries and to compare it with,” he added.
“In addition to it, our purpose isn’t just to urge as many applications as possible but to entice in high-quality scholars who come to Sweden.”
Study in Sweden marketing has also sought to draw in international students that “genuinely want to form the planet a far better place”.

The Choose Equality | Choose Freedom | Study in Sweden film was launched in June by Study in Sweden.
Washburn described that “It’s diverse than what you would consider seeing in a scholarly area, and that’s okay because Sweden is a truly unique learning destination.”
“We discovered that numerous students that arrive in Sweden desire to be part of a global campaign for doing good in the world and desire to study in a nation where they can be themselves.
These are things we feel hooked into highlighting given the importance they need for our international students,” he said.
While the admitted number of scholars is promising news, it remains unclear what percentage of students will arrive of these admitted.
The Swedish Companies
“The question is, at this stage, it is possible for” Swedish foreign companies, which have an important role to play in the issue of a residence permit,” Washburn said.
“They are working in difficult conditions to get a residence permit, but there is always the possibility that one of his trump cards, it will be extended to the countries that are most affected by the pandemic.”

However, Swedish authorities have lifted requirements to attend on-campus classes for the 2021/22 academy year, he added, which has previously been required to receive a residence permit for studies

“There is still some skepticism as a result of the pandemic and things can always vary but it looks like several universities are starting to begin campus during the fall semester,” he added.
“I know that this is a Swedish university, and has done a great job of communicating with students, and to keep up with what is expected in the fall, as the universities are given of the fact, that the universities to a certain degree of freedom in how they can influence on things .”
