How to Get a Study Visa for USA, Canada, UK, and Australia

Securing a study visa is an essential step for Indian students planning to study abroad. Each country has different visa requirements and processes. Here’s a step-by-step guide to obtaining a study visa for the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia.


1. USA – F-1 Student Visa

The F-1 visa is required for international students enrolling in full-time academic programs in the USA.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Get accepted by a SEVP-approved university.
  2. Pay the SEVIS fee ($350) and receive the I-20 form from the university.
  3. Complete the DS-160 visa application and pay the visa fee ($185).
  4. Schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy or Consulate.
  5. Attend the interview and provide necessary documents (I-20, financial proof, academic records, etc.).

Processing Time: 2–6 weeks.

Post-Study Work Options: Eligible for OPT (Optional Practical Training) for up to 3 years after graduation (for STEM courses).


2. Canada – Study Permit

Canada requires a study permit for international students studying at Designated Learning Institutions (DLI).

Steps to Apply:

  1. Get accepted by a DLI-approved university and receive the offer letter.
  2. Take a medical exam (if required).
  3. Submit the online visa application on the IRCC website and pay the fee (CAD 150).
  4. Provide financial proof showing funds for tuition and living expenses.
  5. Complete the biometrics and visa interview if required.

Processing Time: 3–12 weeks.

Post-Study Work Options: Apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years after completing your studies.


3. UK – Student Visa (Tier 4)

Indian students must apply for a Tier 4 (Student) Visa for full-time courses in the UK.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Get a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from a UK university.
  2. Provide proof of financial support (£1,334/month in London, £1,023/month outside London).
  3. Apply for the visa online and pay the fee (£490).
  4. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for medical coverage.
  5. Attend the biometrics appointment and interview.

Processing Time: 3–6 weeks.

Post-Study Work Options: Graduate Route Visa allows students to work for up to 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates).
