UK Shift to e- visas simplifies immigration for overseas students
The UK has taken a significant step forward in simplifying the immigration process for international students by introducing the E-Visa system. This transition replaces the traditional Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards with a secure, digital visa platform that makes it easier for students to manage and access their immigration status.
What Does This Mean for International Students?
- No Need for Physical Cards
International students no longer need to carry or worry about losing their BRP cards. Instead, by creating a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account, students can access and prove their immigration status online anytime and anywhere, making the process more convenient and secure. - Updated Financial Guidelines for Living Expenses (Effective January 2025)
International students applying for a UK student visa must provide updated evidence of their financial capability to cover living expenses. The financial requirements are as follows:- London-based Students: £1,483 per month (up to £13,347 for 9 months).
- Outside London: £1,136 per month (up to £10,224 for 9 months). Universities may begin enforcing these new financial criteria as early as December 2024, so students should check with their institutions to ensure compliance and avoid delays in the visa process.
- Grace Period for Physical Documents
To ease the transition to the E-Visa system, the UK Home Office has announced a grace period until March 2025. During this time, airlines will accept expired BRP cards issued on or after December 31, 2024, allowing minimal disruption for students traveling to the UK. - Simplified CAS Process
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process has also been streamlined. If there is a delay in the visa application and the course start date has passed, universities can issue a new CAS linked to the original one, provided the new intake is within six months. This flexibility reduces stress for students facing delays in the application process. - Positive Digital Transition
With over 3.1 million people already using the E-Visa system, the UK government is providing ample support to students transitioning to the new digital platform. Migration and Citizenship Minister Seema Malhotra assures that guidance will be available to ensure a smooth transition for all students.
Steps to Access the E-Visa:
- Create a UKVI Account
Students must visit the official UKVI website to set up an account. They will need an email address, a smartphone, and their BRP or visa reference number. - Verify Identity
The ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app can be used to verify students’ details, ensuring that their identity is confirmed securely. - Access the Digital Visa
Once verified, students will have access to their E-Visa through their UKVI account. - Stay Updated
It’s crucial to keep the UKVI account updated with current passport details and contact information to avoid any issues or disruptions.
