New Zealand Eases Post-Study Work Visa Rules for International Students

 In News

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has introduced several revisions to the Post-study work visa (PSWV) rules, aimed at providing better opportunities for international students to work after graduation. The new policy is designed to offer more flexibility, allowing students who complete a combination of postgraduate qualifications to apply for work opportunities.

One of the key changes is that students who pursue a 30-week Post-Graduate Diploma (PGDip) and then continue to a Master’s program can now be eligible for a PSWV, depending on their enrollment in the PGDip course. This update offers international students more avenues to gain post-study work experience and contribute to the local workforce, which is widely welcomed by industry experts and educational providers.

In recent reports, New Zealand has seen a significant increase in international students, with nearly 69,000 students arriving in 2023—a 67% jump compared to the previous year. The country remains a popular destination for international students due to its affordable and high-quality education system. PhD courses in New Zealand typically cost between NZD 7,000 and NZD 8,500 per year, while annual living expenses range from NZD 18,000 to NZD 27,000. Around 90% of international students have expressed satisfaction with their study experience in New Zealand, contributing to the country’s growing appeal as a top study destination.
